Finding A Fun Summer Job
Finding A Fun Summer Job
What are you doing this summer? Probably getting a job. Will it be just a job or something amazing? Well maybe this is the year to be a Summer Camp Counselor.
What you want to get from a summer camp job? Education majors this it is a chance to work with kids. Do you love a sport you want to teach and play? With thousands of camps and hundreds of specialties this is no easy decision. Do some research on the Internet on what you might like best.
Here is an important hint: We have all heard of the “magic” of summer camp. But that is only a part of the story, more importantly there is the intentionality of camp. It is more than just letting our camp days happen. It is a knowing and imagining what we want from our campers, fellow staff and ourselves. Camp provide a safe haven for working through real life situations: resolving conflict, making choices, and interacting with others all with a positive outcome.
Life is a choice-We must realize that everything we do is intentional and each and every one of our decisions has a consequence. All of our life is a choosing. We can choose to ignore a camper’s unacceptable behavior and chances are it will persist or we can choose to counsel the child in an effort to guide them down a more fertile path.
Generosity- Being an SNC Counselor is all about giving. Giving of yourself, your time, your energy. These are all gifts that you must be willing to freely give 24/7 to your children.
Dedicated- When things get tough do you give up? Do you take the easy route? Camp is a place where we need to go back to the drawing board and figure out why it’s not working. What we need to do to mold our campers into a positively motivated team, that respect and listen to each other.
Fun- Fun and smiles is what makes the world a happier place. No matter how difficult a day might be a smile seems to make it better. Share a smile and brighten someone’s day. FUN begins as an attitude and becomes a way of life. There is nothing more rewarding than a happy child.
Caring- When you look into a child’s face can you remember your days as a youth? Can you remember how that special someone listened to what you had to say, how they made you feel important? Can you do the same? Can you do it everyday for 10 weeks?
Counseling- That’s more than just a title for your job, it’s really what your position is at camp. It’s not yelling, ordering, demanding or punishing. It’s taking time to listen to a child then helping them look at the options and pick the best option open to him or her. This takes time and energy and is much harder than just saying do this, but that’s what counseling is all about.
This your chance to see a new place? Are you up for a traveling? This time is for an adventure, if you want it. You may be able to work in a different state, or even a different country. So toss the dart at a map or be more scientific but pick a place you want to spend your summer.
Searching for a camp job has never been easier with google. Summer camp jobs are often found in a directory, try to find one specific to summer camps, I like campchannel.com. Although good they do not have all jobs, so you may want to do specific camp searches like Nature Camps or Soccer Camps.
At each camp website look at the pictures and videos and try to figure out if you will feel comfortable at that camp. The summers are long and you want to be happy. Do not go directly to an application without spending time to make sure this is the place you want to spend your summer.
After researching a few camps, pick one or two and simply fill out an application. The camp Director will want to conduct an interview, usually they will call or email to schedule one. Camps like to meet face to face but often a phone interview is the best they can arrange.
Here is a hint for the interview, camp directors want to hear something deeper than you lc to play outside. Tell them how this experience be important for you and what you bring to the party. Have plenty of questions for the Director, cam is a mutual understanding , where all need to be happy.
Oh one last thing, pay, that’s NOT a reason to get this job. However, a benefit is they will feed and house you during your time. Camp is a n experience you will carry with you for the rest of your life, you will remember your kids like they are your own.
