You’ve heard of mystery shopper jobs, right? The idea is that you actually get paid to go shopping! So on the surface, it sounds absolutely wonderful, who wouldn’t love that? But as you dig a little deeper you realize there are a lot of lists where you can sign up, and then wait. Then wait some more. Finally the waiting gets old, and the dream of buying a new pair of shoes – for free – is gone.
That’s the problem with mystery shopper jobs, sometimes called secret shopper jobs, there are tons of companies out there, but most are not too serious about putting you to work. At least that was my experience. I got on a bunch of lists, then when I did get an offer, it was to go look at a house for sale. Now, I may could have pulled it off, but the idea of going meet with a real estate agent on on my day off, with no intention of buying a house, was outside of my comfort zone. Another assignment, was to meet with a swimming pool company and price their installations, again, outside my comfort zone.
My main intention all along was to find some cool restaurant and have a free dinner, not be on the hook for a swimming pool! So finally, I found an ad for a secret shopper company, and I though to myself, maybe I would give it one more try. I reluctantly signed up, expecting to be ignored. But within 48 hours I had my first assignment. It was for a restaurant just up the street, and get this, we had to order beer and hot wings! I’m serious, we literally had to order beer and hot wings. Now I don’t know about you, but that’s my kind of job assignment!
Now that I’m all set up, I can kind of pick and chose between new assignments, only selecting the ones that really interest me. We look at our mystery shopper jobs as mini adventures from our everyday routine. We always have a good time, and never spend a dime. I would caution against thinking you could make this a full time job. It could be done I suppose, however, it would require a lot of work. Most of us would rather make this fun, and not so much like work. The reason I say it would be tough, is that most of the mystery shops we’ve done, we were simply reimbursed for our expenses. So there was not real profit.
Some jobs do offer the opportunity to pocket a little money as well, but for the most part it’s a free night out, or shopping trip, or theme park, or whatever you want it to be. Again, the main idea is to have fun, no worries, just add a little adventure to your routine.
Mystery shopper jobs are out there, but if you waste your time with a company who’s not serious, you won’t get anywhere! You have to somehow get your hands on a list of the best mystery shopper companies out there. Once you do, you can become a mystery shopper yourself. Go for it!

I don’t know how I got the impression that “Men of a Certain Age” (9 p.m. Central Monday, TNT; two stars) was a half-hour show. It’s not. But that’s part of the problem with this intermittently interesting and frequently frustrating show. There’s a certain slackness to the story lines on “Men,” which concerns the lives of three good friends in their late 40s. If I weren’t above such things, I’d pun that the plots spread out like a middle-aged gut. Even after I read the show’s press materials and realized “Men” was an hourlong drama, as I watched each episode, I kept looking over at the clock before the 30-minute mark arrived, waiting for “Men” to wrap it up.
Joe, who is newly separated from his wife (Penelope Ann Miller), owns a party store and has a gambling habit bad enough to have broken up his marriage. Owen is a married guy with three kids who works for his father in his father’s successful car dealership, where he is neither his father’s favorite salesman nor his most successful. Terry is a single, out-of-work actor who is a ladies man and works a permanent temp job crunching numbers.
None of them will ever set the world on fire, and, like most people, their lives are made up of small failures and middling wins that seem great in the overall scheme of things. Every actor in the show is perfection — including Miller and Lisa Gay Hamilton, who plays Owen’s wife.
Andre Braugher scored an Emmy nomination for his first-season portrayal of the self-doubting Owen, and Men of a Certain Age shines as a beacon of distinctiveness in TNT’s schedule of female crime-solvers (The Closer, Rizzoli & Isles) and gloomier versions of USA Network’s ”Characters Welcome” lightness (Leverage, the just-canceled Dark Blue). It’s cable’s finest odd duck: tales of three middle-aged guys who scorn the sexy/cool/ad-friendly demo.
To give you some idea of how good and unusual this show is, the standout moments of Men’s season premiere involve Joe’s discomfort over having to use reading glasses for the first time. Self-conscious about aging and his newly single status, he can barely bring himself to do things that might give him joy, whether it’s golfing or dating. Similarly, Owen can’t revel in the victory he secured at the end of last season – forcing his imperious dad (Richard Gant) to let him run the dealership – because as soon as he takes over, he faces new ego-battering problems, such as a sales staff that dismisses him as a mere daddy’s boy. And by the show’s second episode, Terry, who’s already admitted that his acting career has gone nowhere, is also ready to chuck his car-salesman job. He can’t take the humiliation inflicted by his colleagues, who’ve discovered a YouTube video of an embarrassingly campy TV commercial Terry made years ago. These are not, to put it mildly, happy men.
Braugher, who plays Owen, a father of three working for his taskmaster father as a car salesman, occasionally gets interesting things to do, but I couldn’t escape the feeling that “Men” taps into only about 30 percent of his range. Casting this magnetic, subtle and precise “Homicide” vet in a slight dramedy about men facing their insecurities is like bringing a Howitzer to a water-gun battle. Braugher could supply a lot of firepower — he effortlessly nails both the comedy and the drama — but the show doesn’t quite know how to use his many gifts. As does Braugher, Scott Bakula excels at playing the kind of character we’ve all seen before. Terry is the Peter Pan of the group; he’s still pursuing a “cool” career as an actor (but in reality, paying the bills by working as a temp). The adept, versatile Bakula demonstrates a light touch with Terry’s rogueishness and pathos.
There are a few confrontations or comedic moments that catch fire, but mostly “Men” just ambles along, sometimes perceptively and sometimes lazily observing the lives of these guys, who have stumbled into middle age and its grinding routines and hard-won but significant satisfactions. These observations don’t add up to much and the show’s pace frankly becomes tedious at times. If these appealing actors anchored a better-constructed half-hour show, “Men’s” low-key charms would be a lot more effective. But I guess middle age isn’t necessarily about getting what you want.
